CUPE 3886 employees at Royal Roads voted on December 13 to ratify a new three-year collective agreement and signed the preliminary agreement that was reached on December 9. Discussions began on May 15, 2019. The parties reached a provisional agreement on 9 December. CUPE 3886 members ratified the agreement on 13 December. The RRU Board of Governors ratified the agreement on 12 December. The university`s public sector employers` organisation ratified the agreement on 16 December. Royal Roads University (RRU) and CUPE 3886 have successfully ratified their collective agreement, in line with the provincial government`s bargaining mandate for sustainable services in 2019. The new agreement follows the provincial mandate of two per cent increases each year to the three-year contract, which runs from June 1, 2019 to May 31, 2022. Other items negotiated include increasing safety footwear from 150 to 225 $US, as well as reimbursement for protective clothing and wet weather equipment needed for safe work. The strengths of the collective agreement are as follows: universities and higher education institutions across Canada have collective agreements with their faculties and employees, and negotiations to extend collective agreements or collective bargaining are part of the life cycle of collective agreements. Burrows thanked the CUPE 3886 Negotiating Committee and the CUPE National Servicing Representative for their work. Negotiations began in July with half a dozen meetings, including full days and half days. “We are delighted that members have agreed that we are committed to the issue of living wages,” said Don Burrows, President of CupE 3886, noting that 56% of members work for less than a living wage. “That`s why we fought to ensure that the members with the lowest salaries now receive a living wage.” CUPE Collective Agreement from June 1, 2019 to May 31, 2022 CUPE Local 3886 represents approximately 75 Royal Roads employees who work in grounds and gardens, facilities, care, production, care and maintenance. In the event of overtime calls, 3886 CUPE members now receive reimbursement of meal expenses in line with the Dinner Travel Directive. Language improvements include changes to union vacations, which benefit all workers, as well as improvements for seasonal workers. . .
